The afternoon the Grainger Centre smelled of summer

DJ Nikky cued up the first record, the grill got going, and within an hour three generations were sharing tables they'd never sat at before. Newly-arrived families found neighbours, lonely regulars found a chair kept warm for them, and the children ran the football pitch ragged. We left with empty trays, full hearts, and a WhatsApp group that gained sixty new members before sundown.

A long table of household essentials

Trestle tables ran the length of the hall — folded clothes, jars of pantry staples, toiletries laid out like a small shop where nothing had a price tag. Single mothers came for diapers and stayed for coffee. A family two weeks into a new postcode left with bedding and the phone numbers of three neighbours. The mission was simple: a helping hand, given without questions. The afternoon proved how much that still means.

Soup, blankets, and the day donations overflowed the boxes

Our first big gathering of the year. A little girl who came for a teddy left holding two — one for her, one for a friend at school 'who doesn't have one'. By 3pm the donation boxes were overflowing and we'd run out of cups twice. Proof, again, that Doncaster shows up for Doncaster.
